Honoring the Power of Life, Faith, and Legacy
At the heart of our birthing center lies a story of survival, hope, and the enduring power of life. Inspired by the legacy of Chana Sura Zagdanski (née Zucker) — a woman of deep faith, strength, and compassion — our founder, Yetty Engel, envisioned a place where every birth is embraced as sacred and every woman is cared for with dignity, empowerment, and personal connection.
This vision became our birthing center: a space that honors generations of women who, even in times of challenge, chose life, hope, and love.
תהי זכרה ברוך — May her memory be a blessing.
At the heart of our birthing center lies a story of survival, faith, and the enduring power of life.
This story begins generations ago with Chana Sura Zagdanski (née Zucker) — the beloved grandmother of our founder and director, Yetty Engel.
Born in Poland in 1905, Chana Sura was raised in a home filled with love, devotion, and hope, even amid uncertainty. After marrying Ezriel in 1923, she welcomed their first daughter two years later under the gentle care of her mother. Seeking greater opportunity, the young family moved to Paris in 1928, where Chana Sura gave birth to her son Josef and helped her husband establish a small kosher grocery.
Throughout her life, she lived with gratitude and faith. She viewed birth not as something to fear, but as a sacred and natural act — a moment that reflected both human strength and the divine spark of creation.
When her granddaughter Yetty was expecting her first child, Chana Sura would often reassure her that birth happens “comme une lettre à la poste” — “just as it should.” When Yetty’s own child arrived, she discovered the truth of those words, as the intensity of labor gave way to the wonder of holding new life in her arms.
After the war, Mémé, as she was lovingly known, carried with her the stories of the lives she helped welcome into a wounded world. She rebuilt her life with resilience and grace, teaching her children and grandchildren that to bring life into the world is the highest expression of faith, love, and hope.
Inspired by her grandmother’s courage and compassion, Yetty Engel followed her calling to midwifery — to walk beside women in their most transformative moments. She envisioned a space where birth would be honored as sacred, and where every woman would be cared for with dignity, empowerment, and genuine connection.
That vision became our birthing center — a living tribute to Mémé’s legacy and the generations of women who chose life even in the face of hardship.
Here, every birth is embraced as a sacred event. Every woman is honored not only as a patient, but as a bearer of life and light.
Through each new beginning, we continue an unbroken chain of faith, resilience, and love — one story, one mother, and one beautiful new life at a time.
תהי זכרה ברוך — May her memory be a blessing.
"When you bring life into the world - even in the darkest place - you kindle a light that can never be extinguished."
Mémé (Hannah Sarah)
After the war, Mémé, as she was affectionately known, carried with her the stories of the lives she helped usher into a wounded world. She emigrated, rebuilt her life from ashes, and passed down her wisdom and spirit to her children and grandchildren – always teaching that to bring life into the world is the highest act of faith, love, and hope.
Her granddaughter Yetty, grew up in awe of these stories – the whispered memories of courage, sacrifice, and tenderness. From an early age, Yetty knew she was called to continue this sacred mission.
But she also knew that today's women deserved more than survival – they deserved birth experiences rooted in dignity, empowerment, and deep, personal care.
Thus, the dream of our birthing center was born.
A place that would honor the strength and spirit of women like Mémé – who, in the darkest times, chose life.
Today, our birthing center stands as a living tribute to that legacy.
Here, every birth is embraced as a sacred event. Every woman is honored not just as a patient, but as a bearer of life and light.
Here, we carry forward the unbreakable chain of faith, resilience, and love – one birth, one story, and one beautiful new life at a time.
